What is nutritional therapy?

A nutritional therapist (or nutritionist) is like a food expert and health coach all rolled into one. They are trained to understand how different foods and nutrients can affect our bodies and overall wellbeing. When you go to a nutritional therapist for help, they'll take the time to talk with you about your unique needs, lifestyle and health goals. They won't just give you a one-size-fits-all plan – their advice will be tailored to suit you.

Nutritionists can help you with things like improving your eating habits, creating personalised meal plans and suggesting specific foods that can benefit your health. They might also help you with issues like weight management, digestive problems or energy levels. Instead of focusing on quick fixes or fad diets, nutritionists aim to help you make sustainable changes in your eating habits so you're able to stick to them long term. They will teach you about the importance of balanced nutrition and how to make healthier choices that suit your tastes and preferences.

Overall, a nutritional therapist is a friendly guide on your journey to better health through the power of good food choices and lifestyle changes. They'll support you, cheer you on, and help you reach your health goals in a way that feels enjoyable and achievable.

What can you expect when you work with me?

To begin with, we will work together to discover what's causing your symptoms. I will put on my detective's hat and we will look back to before things went wrong and try and pinpoint the root cause of the problem.

Once we've established the root cause, I will then write you a personalised plan, tailoring it to suit your lifestyle, family situation and cooking capabilities. Please don't worry that I will judge your current way of eating – nobody is perfect (including me!).

You will then be given support you need to put the plan in place and set yourself up to succeed.

My most successful clients are those who prioritised their health and committed to a 12-week programme. If the upfront costs are holding you back, ask me about my payment scheme. Some clients with complex health issues need the 24 week programme. Book a discovery call below to discuss the best options for you. There will be no pressure to sign up for anything during the call.

FAQs

Q. I’ve been backwards and forwards to the doctors and they haven’t managed to help me. What can you offer that they can’t?

A. I understand how frustrating it can be when you come away with yet another medication and you don’t seem  to be getting any better. To start, we have a 90-minute appointment, which gives us plenty of time to discuss your medical history and current diet and lifestyle. Once we have this information, I can look at all your issues as a whole. If you go to see your doctor with a headache and itchy skin,  they will treat the headache with some drugs and give you some cream for your skin. Both are treating the symptoms not the cause. I would look at what the connection is between the two and if you have any other issues like bloating, stress etc. We would then address the root cause of the problem and if we address this the other symptoms usually go away.

Q. How many appointments will I have to have?

A. It’s difficult to say before we have had our first consultation, but I do my best to keep the number of appointments to a minimum. It’s cheaper to buy the 12-week package, and it’s also reassuring to know that you have paid for 4 appointments, which helps most of my clients to commit fully to the changes and get the best results. I understand that not everybody has the funds to do this, so it’s perfectly fine to choose the pay as you go option. There is also an option to split the cost of the 12-week package over a payment plan if this would help you.

Q. Will I have to buy lots of supplements.

A. No. Sometimes it’s necessary to take supplements if you have deficiencies, and they can speed up your recovery. But if you don’t have the budget or you aren’t a fan of taking tablets, we can make lots of changes with diet and lifestyle alone. It’s always a conversation we can have before I put together your personalised plan.

Q. Do I have to pay for expensive tests.

A. No. I have access to some amazing test and lots of my clients feel it’s worth the investment to get to the bottom of complex health issues, but not everyone can afford this option. In these circumstances, I use my clinical knowledge, and we will work on a process of elimination. I often send you back to the doctor if I know the NHS will run the tests for free, although the company I buy my tests from does offer an interest-free payment plan if we decide this is the best path to take.

Q. I’m not a very good cook – will I still be able to change my diet?

A. Yes. I love a challenge, so I will work with you to help you choose the best options you’re able to manage with the skills you have. I also have lots of recipes, handouts and social media videos to help you.

Q. I have to feed my family – will I have to make lots of separate meals?

A. My passion in life is to get everyone eating as well as they can. Most of the meals I will encourage you to eat will be real food that everyone will enjoy. You may have to tweak things if your children are fussy, but I would actively encourage you to get the whole family eating the same meals. I hear lots of stories about one member of the family coming to see me and someone else in the family reporting that some of the symptoms they used to experience have gone away.
